The EU Commission has pirfenidone (Esbriet, InterMune Europe Ltd) approved orphan drug for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The TGF-beta inhibitor is pirfenidone for the treatment of adults with mild to moderate idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, IPF), indicated for the previously approved drug therapy was not available. As it is granted an orphan drug extended patent protection, ensuring a 10-year exclusive marketing rights until 2021. In Germany, according to InterMune with a launch expected in September 2011.
