Five genes are said to have for the development of lung diseases of particular importance, found in 1996 scientists discovered the so-called SpiroMeta consortium. The genetic factors are associated with detoxification, inflammation and healing processes.
In their study, the researchers at over 20 000 subjects, the genetic variations to 2.5 million positions in the human genome and compared them with the individual lung function values of the participants. The result: five different regions of the genome were genetic variants associated with changes in lung function. To consolidate the results, reviewed the research team led by Martin Tobin of the University of Leicester then found links to additional 33 000 subjects.
